Are sand free towels actually better?

This is one of the most common questions I hear, usually from people who have seen sand free towels everywhere but are not quite convinced they are worth switching from a traditional cotton beach towel.

It is a fair question. Cotton towels have been around forever. They feel familiar and they work well at home. But beaches, boats and travel are very different environments and that is where the differences really start to show.

So are sand free towels actually better?

In short, yes, for most outdoor and travel use cases they are. But not for the reasons most marketing claims focus on.

The real problem with traditional beach towels

Cotton towels are designed for bathrooms. Controlled environments, regular washing, plenty of time to dry.

Beaches are the opposite.

Sand, salt, wind, sun and repeated use without proper drying in between quickly expose the weaknesses of cotton towels.

The most common issues we hear from customers before they switch are:

  • Sand sticking and never fully coming out
  • Towels staying damp for hours
  • Heavy, bulky towels when packed wet
  • That musty smell after a few uses

Cotton absorbs water well, but it also holds water. That is great for drying off once at home. It is not great when you are heading back to your car, camper or hotel room.

How sand free towels solve different problems

Sand free towels are not just about sand. That is only one part of the equation.

A well made sand free towel uses a tight, loopless microfibre weave. Without loops, sand cannot lodge itself into the fabric. A quick shake is usually all it takes.

But the bigger advantages come from how microfibre behaves compared to cotton.

Faster drying

Microfibre dries significantly faster than cotton because it does not trap water in thick loops. This means:

  • Less time staying damp
  • Less chance of odour developing
  • Easier packing when travelling

This is especially important if you are swimming multiple times a day or moving between locations.

Lightweight and compact

Cotton towels are bulky even when dry. When wet, they become heavy and awkward.

Sand free towels pack down small and stay lightweight even after use. For travel, boating or caravanning, this makes a huge difference.

Better odour control

One of the most overlooked benefits of quality sand free towels is odour management.

A towel that dries quickly is less likely to smell. Add anti microbial properties and you dramatically reduce the chance of that unpleasant damp towel smell developing.

This is one of the main reasons we chose an anti microbial rPET microfibre for our towels.

Comfort matters more than people expect

One common concern is comfort. Many people assume sand free towels feel scratchy or plasticky.

That can be true with low quality microfibre. It does not have to be true.

High quality microfibre with a soft suede finish feels smooth and comfortable against the skin. It does not have the fluffiness of cotton, but it is far more pleasant than most people expect, especially in warm conditions.

Once people try a well made sand free towel for a full day at the beach, very few want to go back.

Durability over time

Cotton towels tend to thin, lose shape and fade with repeated washing, especially when exposed to saltwater and sun.

Quality sand free towels are designed for repeated outdoor use. They hold their structure, dry quickly wash after wash and are less prone to that worn out feeling cotton towels develop.

This longevity matters. A towel that lasts years is more sustainable than one that needs replacing regularly.

Sustainability is part of the conversation

There is a growing awareness around the environmental impact of textiles.

Cotton is natural, but it is also resource intensive. It requires significant water and energy to produce.

At Will and Wind, we use rPET microfibre made from post consumer plastic bottles. Each of our travel towels repurposes the equivalent of 16 plastic bottles that would otherwise end up in landfill or the ocean.

That decision was about balancing performance with responsibility. A towel that performs well, lasts longer and uses recycled materials makes more sense for how people actually live.

Are sand free towels better for everyone?

It is worth being honest. Sand free towels are not the best choice for every situation.

If you want a thick, fluffy towel purely for your bathroom, cotton still has a place.

But for:

  • Beach days
  • Pool use
  • Travel
  • Boats and water sports
  • Gyms
  • Caravans and camping

Sand free towels are simply more practical.

They are lighter, dry faster, stay fresher and do not bring half the beach home with you.

Why we believe in them

We did not start Will and Wind to jump on a trend. We started it because we wanted products that actually suited the way Australians live and travel.

We use our towels ourselves. We take them to the beach, on boats, on trips and yes, we forget them in bags sometimes. That real world use informs every decision we make.

At Will and Wind, we focus on making sand free towels that are practical, well made and thoughtfully designed. Not just towels that look good online, but ones that perform day after day.

So are sand free towels actually better?

For most people and most outdoor situations, yes.

They solve real problems that cotton towels struggle with and they do it without sacrificing comfort or style when made properly.

If you are spending time outside, travelling or near water, a good sand free towel is not a gimmick. It is simply a better tool for the job.
