You pack up after a perfect beach day and somehow your car, your bag, your lunch and your hair are all full of sand. Sound familiar? If you have been wondering whether a sand free beach towel is actually worth it or just a clever marketing claim, you are not alone. We get asked this one a lot.
So here is our honest answer.
What Makes a Sand Free Beach Towel Different?
It all comes down to the fabric. Regular cotton towels have big looping fibres that grab onto sand and hold it. Getting that sand out again is basically impossible without a proper wash. A sand free beach towel is made from microfibre, which has a much tighter and smoother weave. Sand does not have anything to grip onto, so when you give the towel a shake it falls straight off.
Think of a fluffy bath mat versus a smooth yoga mat. Sand sticks to one and bounces off the other.
Our beach towels are made from high-grade rPET microfibre, which is recycled from plastic bottles. That tight weave is what gives a sand free beach towel its magic. Sand sits on the surface rather than burrowing into the fibres, which means one decent shake and you are good to go.
Do Sand Free Beach Towels Actually Work? Yes. Here Is the Honest Bit.
A sand free beach towel is not going to create a force field around you at the beach. If you roll around in the dunes, some sand will end up on your towel. That part is just physics.
The difference is what happens when you pack up. Shake a cotton towel and you are shaking for a long time. Shake a sand free beach towel and most of the sand falls away in seconds. No stubborn damp clumps. No trail of sand through your car.
We have used ours at Noosa, at Bondi, at Wineglass Bay and at some proper remote Western Australian beaches where the sand is so fine it gets into everything. The difference between our microfibre towels and a regular cotton one is noticeable every single time.
Why Sand Free Matters Beyond the Beach
There is actually a practical reason to care about this beyond just keeping your car clean.
Sand is abrasive. When it gets trapped in cotton fibres it acts a bit like sandpaper, slowly breaking down the material every time the towel gets washed. A sand free beach towel that sheds sand easily ends up lasting longer because the fibres are not being worn down from the inside.
Our microfibre beach towels also dry three to five times faster than cotton, which means less time with a soggy towel stuffed in your bag between adventures. They pack down small enough to fit in a day pack, which makes them brilliant for caravanning and camping trips where space is tight.
And because each towel is made from recycled plastic bottles, you are keeping plastic out of the ocean every time you use one. That is a pretty good bonus for a trip to the beach.
How to Get the Best Out of Your Sand Free Beach Towel
Shake before you leave the beach. One good shake is usually all it takes. Do it before the sand dries and it comes off even easier.
Lay it flat to dry rather than leaving it in a ball. Microfibre dries fastest when it is spread out or hung up. This keeps it fresh and means it is ready for the next adventure.
Machine wash when needed. A cold gentle cycle keeps the fibres performing well. Skip the fabric softener as it blocks the tiny fibres and reduces absorbency.
Are All Sand Free Towels the Same?
Not at all. There is a big difference between a cheap microfibre towel from a discount shop and a properly made sand free beach towel.
The quality of the weave, the grade of the microfibre and the way the towel is constructed all affect how well it sheds sand. Will and Wind towels are made from premium rPET microfibre and designed to perform in real Australian beach conditions. Not to mention the designs are created with award-winning marine photographers, so they also happen to look brilliant.
